Welcome

My name is Anthony Smith. I’m a product designer living in Oakland, California.

Project 1 4

Whistle

Whistle is a hardware and software product designed to help pet owners help find their lost pets and to ensure they are living a full and healthy life.

My role at Whistle was to work as the lead Product Designer to oversee all software design and future product visions.

My tasks at Whistle including leading design sprints all the way through from feature idea development, to prototype building (in this case using Origami) all the way through user testing and eventually to multiple re-iterations and to feature release planning and release.

Here is showing an example of a Design Sprint I lead, using the Google Ventures Design Sprint as guidance, for a feature called Achievements.

As the design lead I spend a lot of time prototyping out future visions for the product. One large problem that people say over and over is they wish they could text their dogs. With the feature Timeline, Whistle is attempting to help alleviate some of that issue.

Since Whistle is not only a software company but also a hardware company, this means that I also spent time working with company leadership and outside industrial designer agency to decide the look and evolved features and technology of the next evolution of the hardware product.

Project 2 4

Jelly

In 2016, while working with Ueno, I had the opportunity to help with the relaunch of Jelly. I worked closely alongside their team of engineers, and with my design partners at Ueno through the User Experience and Interface. As well as prototyping out many variations.

My work on this project included being involved very deeply with the team to figure out not only product problems, but to also see through every pixel ready to production, including icon creation and typography and style guides.

Project 3 4

Slack

I joined Slack, very early, in 2015, as the lead product designer for their iOS platform. My role was to ensure that iOS designs kept pace with the web and desktop platforms, and their goals.

I worked via sketching, prototypes and collabrative coding with engineers to build a simple and powerful app that could do anything a Slack user expected to be able to do on their computer.

While at Slack, I worked to build out early design systems for Slack, including new features like file previewing and commenting as well as base level typography throughout all the platforms.

Project 4 4

Twitter

In 2013, I joined the design team at Twitter. I was fortunate to work on a lot of varying projects, some rather large, some rather small. Twitter is a very data concious business, so a lot of my work was done behind A/B tests and not everything made it to the public, but quite a bit did.

I was fortunate to be part of the design team that created the redesign of Twitter in 2013. Moving direct messages from behind the profile to the front stage and laying the groundwork for the Twitter apps to become what they are today.

I worked heavily on user growth and education while at Twitter. Working as part of a large team focused on internationalization of the product, and ensuring working to help retain new users and to elevate them from newbies to power users.

One of the largest and most impactful projects I worked on was including photos and videos and eventually gifs and Vines (RIP) directly in the timeline, as well as adding the ability to quickly reply, retweet, and favorite (now like) any tweet quickly. Previoulsy doing this required going to a separate view.

This was a massive change from how the timeline used to work, and required a lot of testing, but looking back, I couldn't imagine Twitter functioning any other way now.

Thanks for looking
